Floor Pad Color Guide: Which Pad for Which Job

Floor pads are color-coded so you can tell at a glance what a pad is built to do. The rule is simple: the darker the pad, the more aggressive it is. White pads are the gentlest and polish; black pads are the most aggressive and strip. Everything in between scrubs and cleans at increasing strength.

Floor Pad Color Guide Which pad for stripping, scrubbing, buffing & polishing, and the floors they fit. LESS AGGRESSIVE · POLISH MORE AGGRESSIVE · STRIP White Polishing & dry buffing to a high gloss, least aggressive. Low or high speed · use on clean, dry floors Red Daily cleaning, spray buffing, light scuffs, the everyday pad. Low–high speed · wet or dry buff Blue Wet scrubbing of medium soil, removes built-up dirt. Low speed (175–350 RPM) · scrub & recoat prep Green Heavy-duty scrubbing and light stripping, prep for new finish. Low speed · gentler than brown on softer floors Brown Aggressive stripping, slightly milder than black. Low speed (175–300 RPM) · durable floors only Black Full finish removal during strip & wax, most aggressive. Low speed (175–300 RPM) · never use to clean or buff Maroon Dry / chemical-free stripping & surface prep (screen prep on wood). Burnishing (UHS) pads White, tan, aqua, wet-look gloss at 1,000–2,500 RPM. Colors vary by maker. Convention, not a strict standard, always confirm with the pad manufacturer. Match the pad to the floor: aggressive pads only on durable surfaces. StripandWax.com

One caveat up front: this is an industry convention, not a guaranteed standard. Most low-speed pads follow it closely, but assignments vary between manufacturers, burnishing pads especially. Always check the box and the equipment manufacturer's recommendation before you run a pad.

Blue for medium-soil wet scrubbing and green for heavy scrubbing and light stripping. Red handles lighter daily cleaning.

What color pad polishes or buffs floors?

White polishes a clean floor to a high gloss; red is used for everyday buffing and spray buffing. High-speed burnishing uses white, tan, or aqua UHS pads.
